STEAC STORIES

Yolo County Point-in-Time Count

Backpacks for our homeless neighbors.

Every two years in January, the County conducts its Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, which aims to report on the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single night. With the help of social services staff and volunteers, data is collected and used to determine federal and state funding for the County.

To help break the ice with individuals and have better success with engagement, volunteers distribute different types of material items. This year, STEAC was able to support PIT Count efforts by providing 182 backpacks filled with winter essentials, like tarps, gloves, warm hats, and toiletries, to be distributed to our homeless neighbors. Backpacks were provided to the City of Davis, City of West Sacramento, and the Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency (YCHHSA) in Woodland. These packs were funded thanks to all the generous donations that were made in support of STEAC’s Giving Tuesday Campaign in November.

“The backpacks were a hit…you should have seen the smiles of the individuals that received them. They were so grateful! It melted my heart,” said Kerrie with YCHHSA.

A big thank you goes to members of the City of Davis, Dana Bailey and Miguel Hernandez from the Homeless Outreach team, Taylor Nelson with the West Sacramento Police Department, Kerrie Covert with YCHHSA, all the PIT Count volunteers, and the Yolo County Homeless Poverty Action Coalition for coordinating this effort.
