For many children in Yolo County the school week offers more than education, it is a reliable access to meals. When the weekend comes around, many of those children are left hungry without a school lunch to count on.
Since 2016, the STEAC Food Packs for Kids Program has worked to bridge the gap between school meals and the weekend by providing a pack of food to students who may be experiencing food insecurity. Every Friday afternoon, students who have been identified as in-need by school staff, receive a kids pack filled with non-perishable, kid-friendly food, that keeps them from going hungry until they return to school on Monday morning.
In recent years, STEAC has expanded beyond the initial 20 kids packs that were distributed to one single site. Last fiscal year 17,021 food packs were distributed to school kids in Davis, Winters, and Woodland and fed children in pre-k to high school.
Our expansion efforts have been possible thanks to the outpour of support we have received from donors across Yolo County, and beyond. We are not done yet. We hope to keep expanding to other areas of the County and support more children experiencing food insecurity.
A donation of $250 funds 40 kids packs, enough to feed one child for the entire school year.
