STEAC STORIES

2024 Summer Book Giveaway Event

Summer just got a lot more fun for a group of elementary school students who participated in this year’s STEAC Book Giveaway event.

On June 27th, STEAC held its second Book Giveaway event at Birch Lane Elementary School in Davis. This event was made available to students who are part of Summer Bridge, a program that supports specific groups of students including those that are low-income and migrant students.

A total of 43 students from Kinder to 7th grade participated in this event. Each student was allowed to choose 10 books to take home. Books were specifically chosen by the school librarian to ensure that they fit the educational needs of students, but also books that students would enjoy reading. About half of the books purchased were in English and the other half were in Spanish; many of the books seemed culturally relevant. A total of 597 books were purchased by STEAC and remaining books after the event were donated to Birch Lane and Montgomery Elementary schools.

This giveaway event was funded by the Lynne Gertmenian Rumery Memorial Fund and coordinated with the assistance of Nora Brazil, who was the school librarian at Montgomery Elementary and recently retired.
