STEAC STORIES

STEAC Tribute to Lee Pilon

For more than 20 years, Lee provided compassion, respect, and a safe place for our neighbors in need.

August 2025

For over 20 years, STEAC had an amazing and dedicated volunteer who was devoted to using her time to make the world a better place. In the early 2,000s, after retiring from her career as a teacher in the Los Angeles inner-city schools, Lee Pilon moved north to be near her family. This is where she discovered STEAC, and we are lucky she did.

Lee wore many hats as a volunteer. She was most passionate about her work as manager of our food pantry. We recall when a young woman escaping an abusive relationship came to STEAC for food. Lee was very protective, and as she escorted the woman from our office to our pantry, the abusive boyfriend showed up to intimidate the woman. Lee, who was in her mid-70s at the time, immediately confronted the man, saying, “If you don’t leave right now, you will have to deal with me!” The startled man knew Lee was not to be reckoned with and took off. We were all very impressed. That’s when we realized Lee was a “Mama Bear” when it came to protecting the vulnerable people she helped.

Another hat Lee wore was to screen community college students for what was then our Education Textbook Program. Additionally, Lee served on our Board of Directors and for many years up into her 90’s, she put in countless hours as a “telephone volunteer,” always making time to be consulted on tough cases. STEAC staff recall that Lee was passionate about doing the right thing and tried as many ways as possible to help someone in need.

While Lee cared deeply about STEAC, she cared even more about her family. She was unapologetically enthusiastic and proud of her grandchildren. We also remember her dynamic personality and gift for storytelling, including sharing about her days as a professional dancer before she began her teaching career.

Lee passed away recently on her 92 nd birthday. We are thankful for the time we had with her.
