Volunteers are the lifeblood of STEAC. In fact, the organization couldn't operate with the volunteer. On average, some 200 Yolo County residents volunteer for the organization. STEAC 's many volunteer jobs are outlined below. For more information or to volunteer, contact Susan Simon in the STEAC office at 530-758-8435 or send her an e-mail at ssimon@steac.org.
Volunteers are needed to meet with
clients to fill food orders from the STEAC food closet, located in Central
Davis. Other work includes cleaning
and stocking shelves, sorting, picking up food donations and taking food to the
warehouse in the Yolo County Food Bank in Woodland. Flexible shifts are
available.
Food
Drives and Sorting
Throughout the year, STEAC sponsors
drives to collect food for donations through the closet. The drives are done
with individuals, schools, community groups such as the Boy Scouts, businesses
groups such as the Realtors and with the U.S. Post Office.
STEAC needs volunteers for sorting food and transporting items to the
warehouse in Woodland. Volunteers with trucks are especially needed for these
drives.
Volunteers are needed to meet with
clients, accept donors, sort and organize clothing donations and fill clothing
requests for low-income and vulnerable individuals and families. Shifts are
generally two hours long at the clothing closet, located in Central Davis.
Volunteers are needed to answer
phones, enter data and assist with the database, help with client review and
other tasks in the STEAC office.
STEAC has embarked on an aggressive program to become better known in Davis, Woodland, West Sacramento and in the rural areas of Yolo County. Marketing minded volunteers are needed for graphics creation, newsletter and brochure production and distribution, United Way presentations, attending nonprofit events, press relations, attending business functions, web page management and more.
Help STEAC by volunteering to
answer the telephone service hot line from your own home. These volunteers
answer calls and inform prospective clients and referral agencies about the
emergency assistance that is available. STEAC provides training and a manual of
programs and policies as a reference guide for the phone volunteers. Shifts are
available on weekdays, evenings and weekends.
STEAC holds various fundraising activities during
the year, including soliciting funds from special and annual gifts, major donor
gifts, grants from public agencies and foundations, donations from churches and
businesses, planned gifts and the annual holiday program.
STEAC also hosts special events and raises funds
via the Internet. Volunteers are needed to help organize and plan fundraising
events and participate in workplace giving campaigns in cooperation with the
United Way chapters in Woodland and Sacramento.
Volunteers who have skills or an interest in
learning the techniques of fundraising are needed in this important area.
Adopt-A-Family
Holiday Program
During the holiday season, STEAC sponsors a program
that encourages local residents to “adopt” an individual or family and
provide them with gifts and food. Hundreds
of volunteers are needed to match the adopters to the adoptees, collect the
gifts and assist with the distribution.
The annual program begins in October and continues until just before the holidays in December.
